Normally, in writing music for TV or Ads, you want to avoid political perspectives.
In fact some artists opt to not have their music used in any kind of political campaign.
However, we are seeing more and more instances where the business community feels led to take a stand and show their support for a controversial issue.
We saw this is 2020 with the social justice movement. Many brands showed their support for the Black Lives Matter theme. And during that time, I saw numerous briefs looking to place music from BIPOC musicians and Black Women producers.
Now, the business community is at another historic crossroad with the potential dismantling of Roe V Wade.
While there have been some reports of PR firms urging their clients to take a neutral stand, I believe you’ll see more and more responding to their customer’s demands that they take a definitive position.
It’s just speculation on my part, but I believe when that time comes, there will be opportunities for artists, especially women, who write protest music.
Authenticity is the thing here – I don’t think you can write a song taking a stand for something that you’re not fully passionate about.
But, if you feel strong emotions about this issue, put it to music, you might end up with something that moves your fans AND connects with brands.
Since we’re talking about brands, keep in mind some of the things that work better for ad songs:
- Uptempo
- Hi Energy
- Strong Emotional Lyrics with themes of Protest, Resistance or Empowerment
- Lots of Dynamics in the Instrumentation (Lots of options for Editors)
If you have a song that speaks to this moment, send it to me. (Put Roe V Wade in the Submission Description.) I’d love to hear it.
